2010 at Candise's Cabin

2010 Party at Candise's cabin last night. OMG I laughed so hard last night my belly hurts today. Those girls are just too much fun. I look forward to this every year, and I get more educated every year as well. This year I learned about licking eye balls, Turtle days, and Judy's new catch phrase, "Shut the back door". Ahh, making memories. Good company, good food, good friends, good times. Thanks girls. (Mom not picture b/c she's going Sat night.)

Lexie's Sore Foot

Lexie had been licking her foot for a few days. When it started getting sore looking, we called the vet. He shaved the hair from between her toes (as I had to hold her and coo to her) and discovered an infection between her toes. He said it looked as though she got stabbed w/ something and it got infected. We got a Rx for an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic and also have to put Neosporin on the wound daily. After the Neosporin, she has to wear a sock for 15 min so as not to lick the medicine. She's still doing her 2 mi/day walk without limping or wining. Here's a pic of my little trooper.

David's New Toy

David got a "new" toy from his parents house a few wkends ago. I'll let the picture talk for itself. :)

Girl Time

Kari Z. and I finally met up for coffee after work on Wednesday. We've been promising to do this for the past year or so, but we finally said, screw the schedules, lets just get together! I forgot how much a woman needs her girlfriends. Life is just too short for excuses. Take the advice of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and phone a friend. You'll feel like a millionaire at the end of the day when you have friendships this good!

Last Weekend's Project

I forgot to post last weekend's project. I keep this online journal so that I can remember when we do things. It helps when I remember to post what we did. Our shed was just east to the garden, sitting on rotting boards and slowly sinking (thanks to previous owners). We tag-teamed it so that Dave would lift a corner and I would slide a cement block under it, doing one corner and one block at a time...praying the entire time the thing wouldn't fall on my husband or my dog. The next day we backed the trailer under the shed, put some 12' 2x4s on the trailer, and took the blocks out, one at a time, one corner at a time, to lower it onto the trailer. Drove the trailer w/ the truck onto the cement slab David poured when the garage slab was done (Aug '07). Did the block thing again, said prayers again, pulled the trailer out, and lowered it to the slab. Good teamwork, Babe! Now lets never move that thing again. (Funny, with the shed up on blocks, it looks like one of those redneck pictures you get on email. This would be labeled "redneck A/C". Not that there's anything wrong w/ rednecks.)

Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration

I just finished the book Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration by Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger). Fr Gabriel lent it to me from his personal collection. I would highly recommend this book. He writes very elegantly, but doesn't write over your head. For example, he breaks down the Lord's prayer...each sentence and its meaning, how it became, and how to reflect on it in our lives. It is beautifully written to read cover to cover, but is also a great reference book. What does it mean to be transfigured anyway? Why does God choose mountains to speak to His people? What "daily bread" are we asking for anyway? I would highly recommend this book.

Makis Back in Goodland

Troy & Heather are moving to Goodland today. They packed up the kids and the dogs, and left behind their life in Dexter. A huge decision and a huge change, but may God bless them with His path and His direction towards His will. Good luck guys and welcome home!

6 Month (24 Week) Ultrasound

3D image of Baby Brooks. Last time the little bugger wouldn't wake up. This time, it wouldn't hold still! Luckily the tech got this picture before (s)he started martial arts in my tummy again. A few more 3D foot pics and then the regular ultrasound pictures. So far, so good, except BB1 is breech right now. 16 weeks left to flip. The other night, the head was poking up and the feet stretching on the other side. I could actually cup the head in the palm of my hand.

Ylsned: Microwave your sponge/dishcloths

They say you learn something new everyday. Dish sponges are often the dirtiest pieces in a kitchen. They often live next to the sink, the germiest place in the kitchen, and hold onto those germs and dirt creating a real health hazard. Sponges need to be sanitized at last every other day, and replaced every week or two for best protection against germs. Now, I don't know if Heloise knows this one or not, but at the end of the day, after washing your dishes and wiping down your counter tops, zap your sponge/dishcloths for 30 seconds in the microwave. This kills the germs and helps dry out the sponge/cloth before hanging it up for the night. BUT, be careful, it will be hot! :) This is a safer alternative to my favorite germ killing solution to my sponges...bleach.

Movie: Grown-Ups

We went to the movie "Grown-Ups" with Jer & Stacey and Lenny & Jodi last night. It was surprisingly clean and it had some pretty good one-liners. It also has a few big names from the old Saturday Night Live Show. I'd definitely recommend seeing it, but wait until it comes out on DVD. Afterwards we went for beers (pass the Shirley Temple please) and pool. All in all a good night with friends and a great chance to catch up.

Happy 4th

I forgot to journal what we did for the holiday. Now lets see if I can remember... Friday...I don't remember. Saturday we celebrated Mark turning 6 with the Brooks Family. I supervised Gary & David installing Jackie's air conditioner. hot and humid that day. Went home to nap before heading off to Nashwauk for some gyros and mini donuts...oh and visiting w/ friends and family. We reconnected with Jer & Stac & Brekken (oh those kissable cheeks), David & Kacey, and Lenny & Jody. We found our way to Auntie Ann & Uncle Bob's and caught up with them. We watched the awesome fireworks show with Grandma Angie, Bob, Mike, Cheryl, Ann, Kim, Jeff, Josh, Matthew.
Sunday we went to church, walked the dog, and headed off to Ely. We enjoyed the beautiful sunshine and the Ely parade with Mom & Earl, and even got some Butterfinger bars and pepper from the candy throwers in the parade. (The pepper was Durkee brand, so I can't sniff, sniff at that, LOL!) Afterwards we found some food stands and bought some cotton candy for Earl's son who is serving his country overseas. (He sends him care packages of junk food he can't get over there...and Spam, as a joke.) After some good conversation in the back forty and Kirby doing laps around the table, we headed off to check out Mom's knee-high-by-the-fourth-of-July corn and surrounding gardens and say hello to the rest of the Bulinski clan. Dave & I get such a kick out of Earl's parents that we always like to be able to say hello when we can. They were excited about our expected blessing and told us stories of how their 6 kids were born. Huh. Is it too late to turn back now? :)
We made it home by 830 since I had to work Monday.

What changes when you have a baby?

Happy 4th of July

The 1st fold of our American Flag is a symbol of life.

The 2nd fold is a symbol of our belief in the eternal life.

The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrances of the Veterans who have departed their prospective ranks who gave a portion of their life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world, not to have been in vain and shall never be forgotten.

The 4th fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, for it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for his divine guidance.

The 5th fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of the immortal Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong".

The 6th fold of our flag represents where our hearts lie - andn it is with our hearts that we pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of American, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The 7th fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through these same armed forces that our country is protected and our flag protected against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the Valley of the Shadow of Death, that we might see the light of the day, and this fold is made to honor a Mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day.

When the American Flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on an appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, and they, followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, have preserved for us the rights, Privileges and Freedoms that we are enjoying today.

Wednesday Night Lessons

Last night we started a 6 week series at our church and each week contains a different topic. The RCIA candidates of the church wanted more and so both priests opened it up to everyone. I couldn't believe the people that showed up. What a blessing to have such a large group. This week's topic was the Mass. Why do we do what we do? I remembered a lot from RCIA, but it was still a good refresher. One thing Fr Ryan said was that people complain that they don't get anything our of mass. That's not why we go. We don't go to get...we go to give. Give thanks to our God for all He is and all He has done. Kinda makes it easier to go now, doesn't it? Afterwards we met up with some acquatances of ours, wonderful people we hope to get to know better, and picked at their brains for another hour afterwards along w/ the priest. Truly genuine people who are on fire for the Lord, who also had some great child rearing advice. And I may have a babysitter already!

22 weeks

Pregnancy @ 22 weeks

At 11 inches (the length of a spaghetti squash) and almost 1 pound, baby is starting to look like a miniature newborn. Lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and even developing tiny tooth buds beneath the gums. The eyes have formed, but the irises (the colored part of the eye) still lack pigment. If you could see inside your womb, you'd be able to spot the fine hair (lanugo) that covers the body and the deep wrinkles on the skin, which (s)he'll sport until (s)he adds a padding of fat to fill them in. Inside the belly, the pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily.

How your life's changing:
At this point, you may find your belly becoming a hand magnet. It's perfectly okay to tell folks who touch your tummy that you'd rather they didn't. And if people are telling you that you look smaller or bigger than you should at this point, remember that each woman grows — and shows — at her own rate.
Yea, why is this that people think they can just reach out and touch your belly? I have never touched a pregnant woman's belly. I've been getting the "Oh, you're starting to show a little"-pat-pat. I just can't fathom why anyone would think it's ok to just reach out and touch someone's stomach. Friends and family are acceptable, but I also hug family and friends too. I don't hug out of my comfort zone and I don't feel comfortable with the "pat pat" of a stranger's hand on my belly.

First Kicks

Last Tuesday 06/15 was our 20-week ultrasound of Baby Brooks. The tech said the reason I hadn't yet felt BB kick is b/c the placenta is on the anterior wall, making it harder for me to feel movement. I felt baby for the first time then on Friday. I stopped what I was doing, frozen in time. Was that it? ... Ooo, how about that? But last night I have no doubt. David was on the phone w/ his parents and I was reading in bed. I felt the thump, then again. I lifted my silken pajama top and watched my belly bounce. Not wanting to get up and disturb or shift Baby, I call for Dave. He comes in, phone to ear, and looks at me suspiciously. (I never holler for him, so it must be important right?) He follows my line of sight and stares at my belly, seeing it move. His warm hand reaches out to caress the thumping and tells Candy that the baby just kicked him. Later, BB gets me on the other side. I get a fit of the giggles. What a weird and miraculous feeling. Oooo, there (s)he goes again!

Deer in the Back 40

There was a doe with her new wobbly-legged fawn in our back yard. I took these pictures from our brown room. Baby was nursing while mom looked on. Pretty cool little miracle. Even more so as I look on, rubbing my own swollen belly. God is so good.

Flowering Plants

I have had my Christmas Cactus for 7 years. It has been to Goodland, Hibbing, LaCrosse, Winona, and back to Hibbing and for the first time this year it finally bloomed. My African Violet is super happy lately too!

Water Tests

Got our water tested the other day. Good news, no bacteria or nitrates. Yeah! Makes me feel a while lot better about drinking our water. It's actually really good water, I just never had it tested and being pregnant, it was recommended that we have it tested. A $50 insurance policy if you ask me.

BulKonSchMakiBrooks Get Together

Our 20-Week Baby (1/2 way through already!)

We had our 20 week check up today along with ultrasound #2. First being @ 8 weeks to see & hear heartbeat (147BPM). Baby was hard to track down at first because of its constant movement, but the tech finally got her measurements. Unfortunately baby fell back asleep and was in the wrong position to check out the spine thoroughly, so we have another ultrasound scheduled for 24 week checkup. Little bugger was stubborn...don't know where it gets it from. I even flopped from one side to another to get Baby Brooks to move...no dice. Baby is ~11 oz. Amniotic fluid amount is good. Size and length is good. Baby had feet crossed, so even if we wanted to know the gender, it wasn't letting on! :) Baby is about the size of a banana. We could see the tongue moving, the four chambers of the heart pumping, kidneys, bladder, you name it. The placenta is on the anterior wall of the uterus, which is good b/c it's clear of the cervix, but bad because it delays when I feel baby kick. We watched baby kick me on the screen, but couldn't feel it. We also had a 3D pic taken, but because BB's face was pressed up against my uterus, it a little hard to tell. My heart is but a flutter. What an awesome, awesome thing. Had to show them off at dance tonight. The already Mom's knew what they were looking at. I just nod and smile. Most popular question after due date...do you know what you're having? "Yep," I say, "a baby!" Can't wait to meet you, little one. (The top pic is from the net, not me.)

Did you know that a pregnant woman can demolish a whole watermelon in 2 days? I didn't until I looked down with about 10 pieces left, peered across the room at my adoring Hubby and said, "Sorry Hon, did you want any?"
BTW: Baby Brooks is 19 weeks along. 6" head to rump, 1/2#, and likes watermelon.

Maki-Brooks Temperature Intolerance

I have come up with a new diagnosis: Maki-Brooks Temperature Intolerance. I can tolerate about 71-72 degrees, and that's about it. It's about 68 in our house right now and I'm in my layers of PJs and sweats. On the other hand, 74 and I'm too hot.
Did you know that there is a name for people who eat only one portion of their food at a time and cannot let their food touch? Serial Eaters. (This is what I learn sitting in the breakroom.) They have a diagnosis for everything. No wonder why we're such a self centered and over medicated society. Everyone has something wrong with them. It's not just quirks anymore, it's diagnoses. Arg. Well, if you can't beat em, join em.

Class of 2000 10th Reunion

Saturday morning I got all my house hold chores done with the help my my DB (dearly beloved). My laundry, dishes, floors, and bathrooms were clean before heading out to weed and plant the garden. I had the garden tilled last week, but ... hmmm. :) After planting, we cleaned up, ran to town to drop off a rented movie, and headed to my reunion at the country club. Great food. Great time. I know everyone is on their best behavior, but I graduated with some really nice and genuine people. I forgot how much I liked them. A few of us promised that we would keep in touch better. I was pleasantly surprised to find out how many people still live relatively close to us. All in all, we had a lot of fun and thoroughly .

Ducks in the Back Pond

We always enjoy the wild life on our property. This years we've had Canadian Honkers and wild ducks swimming in our pond. We set some corn out last week for them, and while they loved it, the deer enjoyed it even more. The twin deer from 2 years ago still come around and help themselves to our grass and seeds. Here's a picture of a beautiful mallard that was just chillin' out by the shed.

Bedroom #2 Complete

We FINALLY finished the yellow bedroom. It started out yellow and finished (more mellow) yellow, but with new walls, insulation, carpet & ceiling. It's Christi's room to do with what she wants. I'm slowing moving my stuff in and making it mine. Great job, Honey! We're a good team. What's next? :)

How Much is That Puppy in the Window?

Lexie has turned out to be such a good companion, even a traveling companion. Her favorite spot when we're in the car is the rear window. She is the funniest little thing and has brought so much joy into our lives.

News: Man Struck & Killed While Changing a Tire

There was a fatal accident Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 35. The State Patrol is investigating a 40-year-old Twin Cities man struck and killed by a semi-truck in Pine County. The State Patrol says the accident happened around 3PM in the southbound lane of Interstate 35 just one mile south of Willow River. Officials on the scene tell us that the man had three family members in the car at the time of the crash. No one else was hurt. The investigation in ongoing.

The State Patrol advises that if you get a flat tire on busy roads like I-35, try drive to an exit or pull off the road and call a tow truck. When passing vehicles pulled over on the side of the road, slow down and get into the opposite lane. I think that this is a good reminder for us all.

Maternity Clothes

I did it. I finally broke down a went shopping for a few maternity clothes (or as my brother would call it...matternitty). Target had some really great prices and clearance items. 17 weeks, 5 days pregnant today. My sister in law suggested I get a belly band so that I can wear my old pants and not use the rubber band trick. I bought one for $17, the most expensive item of the day, but per her...well worth it. I thought just your belly got bigger when you got pregnant. WRONG. I won't get into details. There are so many things that the books and the websites don't tell you. :)

Memorial Day Weekend

We started the day off running. We did two loads to the dump from the rental property. Did 3 loads of laundry and hung them on the line. Scrubbed all the bathrooms top to bottom. Vacuumed. Swept. Mopped. Tilled the garden - both directions. Rewarded myself with a 1/2 reading session in the beautiful 86-degree sunshine. Finished the day with a chicken & stuffing meal and thanked God for another blessing of a day. (not much of a "relaxing" weekend, but being productive and purposeful give me the atta-girl I need.)

Ultimate Peanut Gallery

There are always little recommendations people have that they learn in their lives. Whether this helps or not, here's what I've learned through the years:
* Heat up your eyelash curler prior to using and use waterproof mascara, it holds the curl longer. Also, give a good three crimps along the lash. Don't just curl in one place so that your lashes look like the letter "L".
* Use blue Dawn once a month as a shampoo as a Malibu treatment. (I haven't tried this.)
* Use conditioner as a shaving gel. It doesn't dry skin like soap and works great.
* Three things never to cinch on: (1) your wedding, (2) comfortable shoes, & (3) reliable tools.
* Per internet, it doesn't matter what laundry soap you use, it's the washer that does the work at getting the dirt out. The soap contains smell and grease-cutting capabilities.
* When threading a needle, wet the needle, not the thread. This actually "wicks" the thread through the eye of the needle.
* Hard eyeliner? Use a flame to warm the makeup before applying (careful, may be too hot and burn.)
* To prevent noodles from sticking together, pour a shot of oil into the boiling water with the noodles.
* Watch Mr. Roger's Neighborhood now and again. It gives you a boost of self esteem.
* Don't waste your time deciding whether or not to throw something out. If in doubt, throw it out.
* Use wet rubber gloves to pick up pet hair.
* Have friends over. It gives you a better reason to clean.
* Dust and clean with an already wet washcloth on your way to the laundry room with it.
* Take pictures now. You never know when you can take no more.
* Use ammonia & a tooth brush on the white rubber parts of your tennis shoes to get the dirt off.
* Save your egg shells. Tomato plants love when you give them egg shells. (This is from one of my residents.)
* Never say Good Night or Good Bye without saying I Love you.

My 16 Week Avocado

We had our 16 week check up on Tuesday. Short, but sweet and we got to hear Baby's heartbeat again. That is so cool. I could listen to it all day. Baby kept moving so you'd hear the lub-dub lub-dub and then a whoosh when the Dr was trying to get a good reading. Pretty cool. Pretty darn cool!

Weekend: Paint, Clean, Trim, Mow, Fill, Dig

Weekends fly by when you spend them cleaning another house. We've been going to the Keewatin house just about biweekly to clean, cut grass, and get rid of the, ahem, garbage that was left. (It's amazing how some people "live".) This entire weekend was spent priming, painting, fixing, filling & mowing by day and rubbing sore muscles at night. I'm looking forward to going back to work on Monday. :) (Yes, probably with painted forearms. LOL) I did get my laundry done and a movie watched Saturday night ("9" by Tim Burton, kinda cute.) I finished the Rainmaker by John Grisham, not as good as his other books, but still an "OK" read. Yawn, time for the Brooks' to hit the hay. 5:00 comes fast.

Hand-Me Downs

My Sister-in-Law Kim calls and lets us know that she has extra baby "stuff" from her 3 kids and nephew that we can take to use for BB1. We were on the way back from spending the day cleaning the Keewatin house (another story) and figured we'd stop by her house on the way home. 13 large Tupperware tubs, jumpers, strollers, a swing, play pen, toys, sit & spin, sled, and a crib from Gary & Candy's home later we're on our way home to unload the van. Yeah, I'd say that's a good start! Thanks guys. Enjoy the extra space in your garages!

Baby Greetings

Dear Diary, I never knew they even made cards of celebration for "parents to be" or "happy Mother's day to the mommy to be," but I've received them out of the thoughtfulness of family and friends. I also received a spider plant from my Mother-in-Law, also called an airplane plant. I had been looking for the past few months for one because they naturally clean the air like ivys and lilies. I also received a bouquet of pink & blue carnations from my Mom & Earl at work the other day with cute "baby" ribbons on it. Thank you all for your kindness. It truly is so sweet and makes me feel so special!

Wedding Dress Preservation - Part II

Finally bit the bullet and had my dress preserved. I kept it in the back closet for the past 3 years. I'd gaze at it from time to time and even tried it on one last time--5 weeks pregnant. I was on the fence about preserving it, because it seems so final to me. Another chapter in my life moving on and another starting. As long as I had that dress available to me, I had those feeling of "new bride" in me. Well, that new bride's huge dress was competing for space in the "new groom's" closet of sports equipment. And there is going to be a new chapter starting...from newly weds to newly parents. So the dress is cleaned, preserved, and under the bed until someday it makes its reappearance on someone else's new chapter in their lives.

On Sunday May 9th, in celebration of Mother's day and Gary & Candy's birthdays, all the Brooks kids got together for a yummy pot luck. DB & I were in charge of the keg ... oh I mean cake, right Jen? And what better than a Disney ice cream cake? Happy Birthdays you two. We always share so many laughs and loves in your home!

It's Beginning to Look a lot Like ... Mother's Day?

Just wanted to send out a special Mother's Day message to all the mothers and future mothers in my life. Your nurturing and loving ways through God's grace are going to change this world through your children. Thank you for all that you did, do, will do!

Movie Review: The Terminal (2004)

We rented The Terminal the other night. It was a clever, quirky film, starring Tom Hanks. I like him as an overall actor, and he did well in this film, too. Your heart goes out to this foreigner as he bides his time in an airport terminal while his country is fighting for peace (oxymoron, but we often fight for peace). Anyhow, it is a different film, low action, slightly slow moving, but interesting & clever non the less. I would recommend renting & watching once, don't buy. Same as Cast Away. You can only watch it once.

Tres Cinco de Mayo Anniversary

Today is my Dearly Beloved's (DB) and my third wedding anniversary. Whoo-hoo! It's surprising how fast it went these past few years. I always had a little crush on him in highschool. He was so hot with his trumpet and when he was playing basketball. I guess he played football, but I didn't pay attention to the games. (You can't tell them apart in their helmets anyhow!) We started dating May 2006, fell head-over-heels in love June. He proposed August 26th. We were wed about 9 months later. Three years later, he still treats me like his new bride. Mu-wah!

I Love My Pot

I bought a cast iron dutch oven a few months back, but didn't want to "recommend" it until I tried it out. I love it. Lodge makes a fabulous line of cast iron cookware, pre-seasoned. On the PBS show "Cook's Kitchen" they trialed many skillets, and found that among the stainless steel, Teflon, and cast iron, they recommended the Lodge cast iron over all the rest in ease of cleaning, food not sticking, & food taste. The only down side is that it's heavy, but that was no surprise. They also recommended, amongst all different blenders, the Kitchen Aide blender over all the rest. I have that too, so I must be doing something right at choosing kitchen accessories. Now if only I knew how to use them all! Haha

On the bottom of my blog, I've added a "baby ticker" from http://lilypie.com. It's pretty cool. You get to see the little cartoon "Christi" with a growing belly and a little update as to how BB1 is developing. Check it out above our wedding pic. 14 Weeks is welcoming me into the 2nd trimester!
